Where did you study: Newcastle
Course Title: Design for Industry
Project tutor - David Parkinson
Course Leader - Rose Wong
Mission Statement:
"Exploring an industrial design approach to promote sustainable growth of the macro
algae industry that embraces Co-Design principles, and to build a network of coastal
communities, connecting people to create a design proposal that uplifts all those
involved."
How did you feel about winning a Colour in Design Award – what does it mean
to you?
A little overwhelmed with all of the positive feedback, but it has been an amazing
experience which means a lot to me and has inspired me to push myself and the project
further.
What inspires your creative process?
From the start I built up relationships with the coastal communities I wanted to work with
which really helped shape the project. This combined with hands-on experimentation
and a natural love of the ocean really inspired me creatively.
What do you want to do next?
I hope to continue building on the relationships with the people I met throughout the
project and to invest more time and research into creating an industry standard ink from
seaweed.
Creative high point?
Winning this award!
Creative low point?
Like most students, I found it hard to stay motivated during lockdown. On top of this,
sometimes I get overwhelmed with research and struggle to navigate my way through to
actualise a final outcome.
Is there one person during your studies/life who has really made a difference to
you?
There’s not one single person who has been solely influential but a cohort of friends,
family and teachers who have helped me grow and develop my skills, not only as a
designer, but also in my personal life. - Thank you to all of them!
What is your favourite colour?
That’s tricky…I normally love warm yellows and reds, but today I am particularly drawn
to Burnt Ochre.
