The Judging Process
The Colour in Design Awards judges are all leading experts who are recognised for their colour expertise, craftsmanship, industry knowledge and laser beam precision for spotting new talent.

They are not easily impressed either and so being recognised as a winner or ‘one to watch’ is a huge boost to the confidence and success of whoever gets through the grilling.
The Criteria
The recipient must:
SHOW OUTSTANDING & INNOVATIVE USE OF COLOUR WITHIN THEIR WORK
DEMONSTRATE A HIGH LEVEL OF SKILL IN THE EXECUTION OF THEIR WORK
DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF IT'S POTENTIAL WITHIN A SPECIFIC MARKET
DEMONSTRATE

Meet the Judges 2024
Many of the judges are past alumni of New Designers.
All of them have been through every challenge any young designer will face in the development of their careers and to prove how important it is to support a new generation of creative talent they have donated their precious time, expertise, energy and enthusiasm for free.
Corinne Julius
Corinne Julius is a Journalist, Broadcaster and Curator who has been one of the best champions of new design talent in the industry. A judge of many applied arts and design awards she is also a mentor on the Crafts Council mentoring programme and has been a member of numerous Crafts Council committees. Corinne is a guest lecturer and student advisor at leading arts universities, including the Royal College of Art and the University of the Arts. In 2008 she was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art for services to design and craft and is the Chair of the Critics’ Circle, Visual Arts & Architecture Section.
Laura Perryman
Laura Perryman is the founder of ‘Colour of Saying’ the global colour and materials trend forecasting studio and author of the bestselling must have book The Colour Bible. Laura combines a keen eye for detail and a laser beam focus for spotting new talent. Her extensive knowledge of new materials and developments in colour for worldwide markets make her a perfect judge for the awards and she is a New Designers Alumni.

Daniel Heath
Daniel Heath is a British award winning independent wallpaper, textile and furniture designer renowned for his illustrative engaging designs and superb craftsmanship. He is also a proud brother of the Artworkers’ Guild of London.
An experienced academic, he has lectured Textiles at Loughborough, Manchester, Bournemouth, Staffordshire, Bucks New University and Central St Martins and also provides mentoring for young designers through the Crafts Council Hot House scheme.

June Mineyama-Smithson
We are thrilled to designer, lecturer, mentor and champion of colour in design MAMIMU (aka June Mineyama-Smithson) on our judging panel. Also a judge for the prestigious D&AD awards, she knows a thing or two about spotting creative talent.

Dharma Taylor
Dharma Taylor is a multidisciplinary designer and maker with a background specialising in menswear and textiles. Dharma’s way of combining textiles such as hand tufted rugs and tapestry with woodwork produces works of great beauty and deceptive simplicity. This year she will be looking out for designers who have the talent, determination and drive to make it in the industry.

A long standing judge for the Colour in Design Awards and true champion of new talent, Katrina adds her knowledge, insight and experience to helping the next generation of UK design talent achieve their full potential.
Karen Haller
Karen Haller FRSA, The leading global Behavioural Colour & Design Psychology Specialist, helping businesses and design professionals to use colour and design to improve well-being, support mental health and create positive change in the world.
Karen consults and collaborates with companies looking for innovative solutions to social problems who seek new ways of improving the human experience in balance with nature.

Simon Hamilton
Simon Hamilton is a London-born and based Interior Designer, Presenter, Lecturer and Diversity Advisor. For over 30 years, he has worked across a broad range of design sectors in a variety of roles, including creative lead, design recruitment, studio management, customer experience and event coordination. We are very lucky to have him on our judging panel line up.

Stephanie King
Steph is the Creative and Content Lead at AkzoNobel decorative coatings in the UK, famous for some of the UK’s most recognised interior decorating brands such as Dulux, Cuprinol and Dulux Heritage. She makes it her mission to break down barriers when it comes to decorating, whether it’s about colour confidence, lack of time or worries about ability, she is passionate about showing people that amazing transformation and effective design doesn’t have to be intimidating nor exclusive.

Clarissa Hulse
Clarissa Hulse is one of Britain’s leading textile designers who has evolved her brand to be one of the most successful in the UK with a thriving global market that continues to grow. Clarissa was born in Prague and lived in many countries while she was growing up including Spain, Italy, Greece and Thailand. She believes that these early experiences of different cultures and landscapes as the driving force behind her love of vivid colour and natural design which is the hallmark of her collections.

Tamineh Frost
After Studying graphic design and illustration at Bath, Tamineh started her international career in textile sourcing and product development, then went on to become BrandDirector at Indo Count Industries, the world’s largest manufacturer of luxury bedding. Now she’s using her talents to help us spot the next big thing in colour and design.
Marianne Shillingford
Marianne is the founder of CIDA is a charitable enterprise that has been set up to help new designers find success in their field of creativity founded by Marianne Shillingford Creative Director of Akzonobel Dulux UK.
Camille Walala
Known for her ambitious, large-scale and explosively colourful interventions in public spaces, Camille Walala uses the man-made landscape as a platform for disseminating positivity. Her work encompasses full-facade murals, immersive 3D installations, street art, interiors and set design – characterised by a fusion of bold colours and playful geometric patterns.
